If you’ve been diagnosed with diabetes, you are probably aware that this disease can cause issues in various parts of your body. Decreased circulation and nerve injury are two conditions associated with diabetes that can have a particularly harmful effect on your feet. At Affiliated Foot & Ankle Care, we want diabetic patients to know that our podiatrists, Dr. Varun Gujral, and Dr. Nrupa Shah, are your partners in managing diabetes and can work with you to help prevent medical problems and damage to your feet.

Your feet rely on a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients being transported by the blood to heal wounds and injuries. The negative impact on circulation that diabetes has can make it very difficult for wounds to heal. This can lead to infection and, in the worst cases, amputation. Neuropathy (nerve damage) in your feet can lead to a loss of sensation, which makes it difficult to detect injuries and infections in their earliest and most treatable stages. With the proper preventive care, however, many potentially dangerous health threats to your feet can be avoided.

Be Proactive about Foot Health

If you have diabetes, you should schedule a comprehensive podiatric examination at our Edison (732-204-6630), Monroe (732-204-6802) or Monmouth Junction (732-204-6945) office. The foot doctor will conduct a thorough physical examination of your toes, feet, ankles, and lower extremities as well as get a complete medical history. At this time, the podiatrist will determine a regular checkup schedule that will provide examinations to detect changes in your feet early that may signal a developing problem. If you have ulcers, notice blood or drainage in your sock, see a blister, rash, bruise or ingrown toenail you should schedule an appointment immediately.

In addition, the podiatrist can provide other services that will reduce your risk of diabetic complications to your feet, including:

  • Callus and corn removal
  • Trimming your toenails
  • Wound debridement
  • Fitting you for diabetic shoes or orthotics
