At Affiliated Foot & Ankle Care, flat foot is a condition we frequently treat in our Edison (732-204-6630), Monroe (732-204-6802), or Monmouth Junction (732-204-6945) offices.  There are different kinds and causes of flat feet, but the characteristic that they all share is a lack of arch in your foot when you stand. For some patients, this is a problem that starts in childhood and gets progressively worse into adulthood. For others, fallen arches are something that happens as an adult due to several factors such as age, weight, or structural issues in the foot.

Symptoms

If you’re not in the habit of looking at the arch of your foot, you may not notice that you have a partially or fully collapsed arch until you begin to experience uncomfortable symptoms. These can include:

  • Pain in your arch, heel, ankle or on the outside of your foot
  • Swelling in the foot
  • Aching feet or legs
  • Ankle that rolls inward
  • Shinbone pain
  • Fatigue in legs or feet
  • Hip, knee or back pain

If you experience any of these symptoms, it’s time to make an appointment to see our podiatrists, Dr. Varun Gujral and Dr. Nrupa Shah, and get your feet evaluated. The foot doctor will conduct a complete physical exam of your feet and may ask you to do a short series of exercises such as balancing on your toes or flexing your feet to see how your tendons and muscles work together. Often an x-ray will be ordered as well to confirm a diagnosis of flat feet.

Treatment Options

Your treatment plan will depend on the severity of the disorder and other lifestyle factors. Conservative options include:

  • Modifying your activities to help avoid standing or walking for long periods
  • Custom orthotics to correct the position of your foot and provide arch support
  • Pain relief through medication, icing the affected area and/or cortisone injections
  • Physical therapy
  • Weight loss if you are obese or overweight

If your arch is collapsed or never fully developed, the podiatrist may recommend flat feet reconstructive surgery to repair the deformities in your foot and done on an outpatient basis.
