At Affiliated Foot & Ankle Care, we know that getting answers to questions about an upcoming podiatric surgery is the best way to decrease anxiety. Knowing what to expect after surgery will help you plan accordingly and set realistic expectations for recovery. Below are seven questions to discuss with our podiatrists, Dr. Varun Gujral and Dr. Nrupa Shah.
- Is there a non-surgical treatment option we can try?
For some disorders, there are both conservative and surgical treatment options. Ask the foot doctor to explain why foot surgery is the best (or only) option for your condition. You can express your interest in trying a non-surgical treatment and see if the podiatrist thinks that is a viable alternative to the surgery.
- What will the surgical procedure entail?
Ask the foot doctor to walk you through the surgical procedure. A diagram or model of the foot may help you better visualize just what exactly the surgeon will do to correct a foot problem and alleviate painful and debilitating symptoms.
- Will the surgery be done as an outpatient or require an overnight stay?
This will help you determine what help you will need getting to and from the site of the operation. It may also affect the pre-surgical requirements. Be sure to check with your insurance company to make sure any pre-certifications or other requirements have been met.
- How long will recovery take?
This is an important question to help in planning time off from work, childcare and re-arranging other obligations and appointments. Don’t shortchange yourself by trying to cut recovery time. Giving your foot the full amount of time to heal will ensure a better outcome.
- Will I be able to bear weight on the foot right away?
If not, will you need to make some arrangements at home to enable you to reach your bed and the bathroom easily and without having to use the stairs? You’ll want everything set up before the surgery so you can come home and rest, worry-free.
- Will physical therapy or additional treatments be necessary post operatively?
In order to aid in the healing process and get the fullest benefit from the surgery, follow up treatments may be ordered, such as physical therapy, orthotic devices, or special footwear.
